Panasonic to close PBX phone system business and discontinue all systems.

Panasonic has made the decision to close its Business Communications arm over the next 2 years. This means that all Panasonic Business Communications products, which includes phone systems, handsets, and scanners, will effectively be discontinued in 2022.

Despite continuing to do well in Europe, Panasonic has blamed the decision on losing ground to competitors in Asia and the US, leading to an uncertain future. It also stated that falling behind in R&D activities meant the business was running at a “constant financial deficit”.

As long-term Panasonic partners we’re sad about Panasonic’s decision, but understand their reasoning. We still support many customers putting Panasonic phone systems to good use. But recently we’ve also been replacing many with cloud-hosted or software-based solutions, like 3CX or Microsoft Teams. Panasonic produced hardy, reliable and cost-effective communications solutions. We’ll be sad to see them go.

Are Panasonic wireless DECT solutions also discontinued?

Panasonic make excellent wireless DECT handset solutions. So good, in fact, that they are a popular deployment even on non-Panasonic phone systems due to their ease of setup, strong and clear signal and excellent build quality.

Whilst PBX, SIP and Scanner categories were all specifically mentioned in the announcement, DECT wasn’t. However, given the entire division is being closed, it is safe to assume DECT solutions are being discontinued too.

If you are using Panasonic DECT handsets with your PBX, you may need to consider a replacement. We utilise both IP DECT and WiFi solutions for local mobility, and can advise on a solution that will suit your deployment.

Support for your discontinued Panasonic PBX

We will continue to support your Panasonic PBX for as long as you need us to.

However, we strongly advise planning for replacement. Replacement parts will become scarce and expensive over time, and with no more development software could be become glitchy, possibly impossible to fix and even a security risk. And with analogue and ISDN lines also about to be replaced, now is the best time to plan your transition.

We’ve helped many of our own customers move from on-site PBX to a cloud-based solution. In nearly every case the customer has ended up with more features for less money.

Replace your discontinued Panasonic PBX

Replacing a legacy PBX is not always simple. They tend to have evolved over time, and the older the PBX the more complex the transition can be.

Important factors to consider can include:

  • Any analogue or ISDN lines will need porting to modern SIP lines.
  • Porting older forms of ISDN can be complicated.
  • Older telephone cabling may need upgrading.
  • Your broadband connection may need upgrading.
  • You may need upgrades or changes to your IT network.
  • Users requiring a handset will probably need a new one.

This is why we recommend talking to telephony experts like us before making the move. We can help you avoid any pitfalls and make a smooth transition.

Should I consider upgrading from my
Panasonic PBX to a new phone system?

Upgrade to a modern PBX phone system.

If you’re making full use of the features of your Panasonic phone system, upgrading to a more modern system makes sense. You’ll get all the features you already use, plus a whole host more.

3CX is a great option and one we’ve successfully moved many of our Panasonic users onto already. It comes in 3 versions, each bundled with loads of features, and is licensed based on calling capacity. This means you pay only for what you’ll use, and both extensions and apps are unlimited and free. We can provide it fully-hosted, meaning we look after everything, or you can self-host on your own cloud, virtual machine or on site server.

Our fully-hosted option starts at just £30 per month, and you can try it free for a month.

What other options do I have?

Cloud-Hosted VOIP

If you only require basic telephony and 10 or fewer employees, this is a good choice. You’ll pay a per-user per-month fee which will cover rental of the phone system, phone lines and usually include free minutes too.

The feature set usually covers all the basic features you’d expect, with advanced features available as bolt-ons. The service is delivered over the internet directly to your handset, so no other hardware is needed on site. Our cloud-hosted VOIP systems starts from as little as £3.00 per user per month, and you can try it for free.
